Honduras is a place of strong mamas! Unfortunately, dads often fall by the wayside, or become increasingly less present in their children’s lives, but present moms, aunts, and grandmas are staples in most Honduran homes. So needless to say, celebrating Mother’s Day well is important in Honduras and also here at Jubilee. And yes, in Honduras, we have the same official Mother’s day as in the US, the 2nd Sunday of May!
This past Friday, regular classes were postponed so that we could have an entire morning celebration for our moms! And Honduran moms loved to get very dressed up for this very special occasion! Over 200 moms, grandmas, and aunts came and squeezed into our Assembly/church room to begin the celebration. The festivities began like they always do, with prayer and praise and worship. After singing themselves, moms were invited to sit to see the Jubilee choir sing a special Mother’s Day song with a Hawaiian theme: “Dios te hizo tan bien,” God made you so well. The choir and choir director, Ms. Paola Soto always surprise us with their creativity and beautiful voices! (See choir sing here) Next, moms were inspired and challenged by examples of moms in the Bible who have much to teach us even now in the 21st century. Next moms enjoyed watching each class perform a special song, dance, or drama for the celebration. We ended with a comical skit done by the teachers and staff, reminding us to always be grateful for the mother that God gave to each of us, instead of wishing our mom was someone else.
After the program, moms joined their children in each of their classrooms where kids gave their moms cards and special crafts that each student made. The festivities ended with lots of picture taken with mom, a delicious lunch, and of course Mother’s Day Cake!
It was a joy to see moms be able to relax, enjoy time with their kids, and feel spoiled and encouraged! We thank God for the moms He has given us!
